On Saturday August 9th, I had the honor of saying a few words about Mary Orvis Marbury at the official dedication of her new gravestone at the Dellwood Cemetery in Manchester, Vermont. The new headstone for Mary was the result of the initiative of Shawn Harrington, the great curator at the Manchester Historical Society. Shawn worked tirelessly to raise the funding, oversee the production and install this beautiful new gravestone so that Mary can now be properly recognized for her place in the history of Manchester and of fly tying and fly fishing in America. The gravestone, made possible by a generous donation by the Perkins family of Orvis, is installed where Mary is interred next to her loving son John “Jack” Morton Marbury and her parents Charles and Laura Orvis.
